The curriculum for our Senior School offers the core subjects of English, English Literature and Maths and a wide range of other subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or dual award Science), two languages (French and Spanish), Drama, Music, Art, ICT, PE, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Business Studies and Food Technology. The use of IT plays an increasingly important role in almost all subjects.
GCSE options are chosen at the end of Year 9 in consultation with parents and students to ensure a balanced curriculum. The Core subjects are English Language, English Literature and Mathematics, but we also expect students to take Science subjects and a Modern Foreign Language.
In Science, we expect most students to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, though a small number choose to study Combined Science. Each subject has its own well-equipped laboratory and experienced specialist staff supported by a laboratory technician.
School Assemblies, PSHE and Citizenship offer religious as well as personal, social and health education.
There are concerts and drama performances at all ages of the school. In the Senior School, the School Production takes place at the end of the Summer Term. The Senior School have their own Carol Concerts staged at St Stephen’s Church, Lindley. The All Aloud Choir competes in the National Youth Music Festival Competition and joins with the choirs of both the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools for the annual Christmas on the Courtyard and Kirkwood Hospice Christmas Fayre events.
There are tests and assessments throughout the year with a formal exam at the end of the summer term. Year 10 take examinations in May with Years 7 to 9 exams in June. Year 11 have their GCSE trial exams in January.
Written reports are sent to parents twice a year with streamlined reports each half-term and Parents’ Evenings take place at key times in the students’ progress.
