Academic Excellence

The results speak for themselves.

Huddersfield Grammar School takes pride in the academic progress and achievement of its pupils. Our results are consistently excellent, and we know that children make more progress while they are with us than is predicted by the baseline assessments collected on their arrival at the school.

We know that when everyone works together to achieve the same outcome we achieve our best results. This includes our innovative staff, supportive parents and talented students all working in partnership to grow and nurture talent so that each individual can realise their full potential.

Our achievement

HGS Pedagogy Model

Huddersfield Grammar School has devised and adopted its HGS Pedagogy Model. Pedagogy is the approach to teaching and the theory and practice of learning. It is premised on the latest educational research, which informs our lesson planning and drives the professional development of our teachers throughout the school.

The golden thread

At the core of the model are the six components of The HGS Identity, the ‘golden thread’ which binds together all pupils who walk through our gates.

Our six components:

In the classroom

The key elements of classroom instruction at HGS, ranging from sharing the bigger picture to modelling, are designed to lead pupils through their learning whilst developing the six character traits that inform The HGS Identity.

Our key elements:

Core principles

The core principles of learning – content knowledge and expertise, assessment and feedback, and deep questioning – are informed by research carried out by the Education Endowment Foundation and underpin all teaching and learning priorities.

Early Years and Pre-Prepatory Results

Success from the start.

In Nursery and Reception, children are set on the path to success from the very start of their education. We track pupils’ development against the 17 early learning goals within the EYFS assessment framework and are proud to consistently exceed the national percentage of children with 'a good level of development' in all early learning goals.

Pupils in Key Stage 1 take part in national standardised assessments in Year 2 and achieve great outcomes, exceeding national averages in English and Maths by over 26%.

Key Stage 1 standardised assessment results 2023:
  • 86% of pupils achieved the 'Expected' level or above in English

  • 86% of pupils achieved the 'Expected' level or above in Maths

Preparatory School Results

Our results are constantly above the National average with pupils achieving over 15% above the national average in 2022 for both English and Maths.

2023 Key Stage 2 SATS results show:
  • 93% of pupils achieved the 'Expected' level or above in English

  • 91% of pupils achieved the 'Expected' level or above in Maths

Senior School Results

2023 GCSE Results.

Year 11 students from Huddersfield Grammar School celebrated their exceptional GCSE results with 37% of all subject grades being awarded at grades 9-7 (formerly A*-A). As a school we recognise the huge commitment that all young people, nationally, have made, as for the first time, pupils will see a “step back to normal” after years disrupted by Covid-19. Now that the majority of these adjustments have been removed or scaled back, results in 2023 are expected to be similar to pre-Covid levels. Therefore, it is even more pleasing that at HGS, eight in every ten grades awarded not only met, but exceeded the prediction from their external GCSE baseline assessment.

With 95% of our students achieving at least five grades at 9-4 (formerly A*-C), and 37% of all subject grades being awarded at grades 9-7 (formerly A*-A), compared to the UK average of 18.2% these results showcase the diligence and dedication of students and teaching staff alike at HGS. We are proud that as a school, we offer an exceptional standard of education across all subjects, enabling children to exceed their expectations.

Top performers include Head Boy Daniel Scott and Ruby Sandhu who achieved 8s and 9s in all of their subjects (A* equivalent) whilst a special mention also to high achieving pupils, Beth Howarth, Ellie Hill, Evie Pearson, Olivia Shorrock, Ben Carr and Oliver Cole who have also excelled as a result of their hard work and tenacity, achieving Grade 7 to 9 (A*-A) across all their subjects and securing a phenomenal 37 Grade 9’s collectively!

These fantastic results are further supported as the school celebrates its consecutive fifth year in the Parent Power Schools Guide, which identifies the highest-achieving schools in the UK. Since debuting in the best schools guide back in 2018, Huddersfield Grammar School has climbed thirty places and is now positioned in the top 50, standing amongst some of the very best schools in the country.
