Reception Class

We aim to challenge and develop each child.

A child’s first years at school are to be savoured and, at Huddersfield Grammar School, we strive to make this as happy an experience as possible. Our reception classes cater for children aged 4 - 5 years old.

We believe in the primacy of the individual and understand that the development of character is a prerequisite for success in life. That is why our young people are provided with a rich variety of experiences, both within and beyond the classroom, that allows them to develop as well-rounded, enthusiastic and impressive individuals.

Our approach

Enjoyable and stimulating education.

Learning is primarily based on play and exploration with termly topics to keep young imaginations inspired.

We use the Read Write Inc literacy scheme and the White Rose Maths programme to develop basic writing and numeracy skills and have specialist teachers for PE, Dance, Cookery and Forest School.

Encouraging active learning.

Our reception classes also benefit from an excellent outdoor environment and state-of-the-art play area. Children enjoy a range of Forest School activities, such as leaf sorting, nature art and identifying insects.

All stages of a child’s progress and their memorable moments are documented in their Interactive Learning Diaries.

With us, children start to learn the key skills, such as listening to teachers and to each other, which are the building blocks of early education.

A day in reception

A range of engaging subjects.

In Reception, we use the popular Read Write Inc. scheme to provide a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy and to encourage children to develop their reading skills. Children learn quickly to develop their numeracy skills using the White Rose Maths scheme which aligns perfectly with the new early learning goals.

We incorporate all relevant aspects of the new Early Years Curriculum in Art, Craft, Movement, Music, Science and Computing. Children enjoy learning outdoors in our beautiful woodland area, cooking in the Food Nutrition Lab and Physical Education in our indoor and outdoor sports facilities, as well as swimming lessons at a local pool.

Music and Drama play important roles in the school. Children have the opportunity to take individual music lessons and to perform in a variety of school productions and class assemblies in the Performance Studio to mark special events in the calendar year.

There are also a wide range of sporting activities and a full programme of extra-curricular clubs and activities to meet all interests.
